352 towns ranked by the commute you actually get, not the fastest train of the day. Every other ranking uses the quickest service on the timetable; this one uses the median journey arriving in London between 07:00 and 09:30, because that is the train people catch.

How far the advertised time is from the real one

Property listings and town guides quote the fastest service of the day. A median is always at least as long as the quickest, so the question is not whether there is a gap but how wide it is, and that varies enormously. Across these 352 towns it runs from nothing to 24 minutes, with a median of 5. In 83 towns, about a quarter of them, the typical peak journey is at least ten minutes longer than the figure in the listings; in 28 it is fifteen minutes or more. These are the widest.

What this ranking does not tell you

Only the journey. Not house prices, not schools, not council tax, not whether you can get a seat, and not what a season ticket costs. A town near the top of this table may be expensive precisely because the commute is good. Journey time is one input into where to live, and this page measures that one well rather than several badly.

Peak figures describe direct services. Fares and crowding are not in the timetable feed, so they are not estimated here.

What makes a good commuter town?

For the journey itself: a short typical peak time, several trains an hour so a missed one is not a disaster, and a direct service. This page ranks on the first and reports the other two. It deliberately says nothing about house prices, schools or how pleasant a place is to live.

Why rank on the typical peak rather than the fastest train?

Because the fastest train of the day is not the one most people catch. A median is always at least as long as the quickest service, so some gap is arithmetic. What matters is its size: across these 352 towns the median gap is 5 minutes, but 83 towns are ten minutes or worse. Chelsfield is the widest: a fastest service of 17 minutes into London Bridge, against a median peak journey of 41.

How were these measured?

From Darwin timetable files published by the Rail Delivery Group, across three midweek days. The typical peak figure is the median journey time of direct services arriving at the London terminal between 07:00 and 09:30. Towns qualify if they are more than 20km from central London and have at least 2 peak trains an hour.
